The goal for this project was to design an Opera House with a seating capacity of 400 for the International District of Seattle. The catalyst for our design was our previous ARTIFACT project.

Artifact is a project for Junior Studio. The intent was to deconstruct a domestic household item to use as a catalyst for designing a cultural building in Seattle, Washington.

Place and Displacement is a photo collage series that explores public perceptions of minorities in a predominately white culture and how that relates to space and time. This project uses current photos from the Washington State Fair juxtaposed with photos from its former life as a temporary assembly center for interned Japanese-Americans during World War II. This project seeks to bring light to a history largely forgotten by a white majority who know the space only as one of food, fun, and entertainment.

I drew inspiration from the work of Alexey Kondakov and Roger Shimomura. Similar to the work of Kondakov, I wanted to use figures from different works and combine them to create new meaning- often to contrast one another. Like the work of Shimomura, I wanted to explore race relationships of Americans- specifically the experience of Japanese Americans in the 1940’s. By exploring the meaning of place and time to Americans of differing racial backgrounds, I ask the viewer to step out of the narrative and the history they think they know.
